How Can Heating Oil Tanks Be Protected From Spills?

Leaks can often be detected and corrected before extensive environmental damage occurs. Routinely inspect the exterior of your above ground heating oil tank for signs of rust, excessive dents, or wet spots on the tank's surface.

Above ground tanks can collapse when the tank legs rust or the soil underneath settles due to the freezing and thawing cycle. Be sure the tank legs are stable and solidly attached to the tank. A concrete pad underneath your tank legs can eliminate the tank settling into the ground. Remember, a 275 gallon tank full of fuel weighs over one ton.

PA Fire Marshall's Code requires that all inside fuel tanks must be filled from the outside through a 2" steel pipe with a minimum 1-1/4" steel vent pipe. Please call our office for further information on proper installation of your fuel tank.
